For centuries, herbal supplements have been used to treat common ailments and are essentially the root of modern day medicine in the sense that many pharmaceutical drugs are derived directly from plant / organic sources. With growing popularity, more and more Americans are using herbal supplements as a dietary compliment.

In today's fast-paced world it's no wonder Americans are suffering from nutritional deficiencies as the result of poor diets and eating habits, unlike underdeveloped countries where food is limited and nutritional deficiencies are the result of inadequate food supplies.  When our bodies don't receive the proper amounts of essential vitamins and minerals, we can easily fall victim to various ailments and diseases.

Often herbal supplements aren't considered useful or even relevant to people who are not suffering from any health concerns, but when the symptoms of disease arise, people often look to herbal remedies to get their health back on the right track. Some of the most common physical conditions that respond well to herbal supplementation include menopause, low sex drive, urinary tract infections, pain and dementia. This of course only scratches the surface of uses for herbal supplements.

Some of the most common herbal supplements sold in the United States  are used as preventative medicine, while others are intended to eliminate ailments or lessen pathologic symptoms of systemic and chronic diseases.  For example, the herb Dong Quai has long been known to ease the symptoms of menopause, while herbs like Echinacea and Goldenseal are proven to aid in the relief of urinary tract infection symptoms.

Most herbal supplements are available in capsules, tablets, elixirs or tinctures. Many herbal teas are also intended to be used for herbal supplementation including green tea, chamomile and jasmine which have been proven to have many positive health benefits. Although most  herbal supplements don't require a doctors prescription to attain them , it's important to consult an alternative medicine specialist prior to beginning any herbal supplement regimen. Many pharmacist also have knowledge relating to dietary and herbal supplements, so if you plan on purchasing supplements from a drug store, it may be a good idea to consult them first.
