Filing your taxes can be a difficult and daunting task – especially for first time filers – but knowing what you need and the best ways to file can make a normally stressful situation a little less worrying.

We've put together a concise article to help you with your tax preparation needs. Below you will find information on what documents you'll need, the best methods of filing and cautions to take when attempting to file your tax returns online.

What documents you'll need:

Collecting your paperwork from the last year is the biggest and most important element of your tax return. Below is a list of documents you'll need in order to file your taxes successfully:

•    W2s from your employers (these should be sent to you sometime around January 15th)
•    A record of mortgage interest paid if you own your own home (this will also be sent around January 15th)
•    Interest income statements (sent from your bank at around the same time as the documents listed above)
•    Charitable donations receipts
•    Childcare expenses (if you have children)
•     Stock statements (if you own stocks)
•    Personal property tax information

Methods of filing taxes

Once you've collected all of the documents you need, you'll have to decide how you want to file your tax return. Luckily, there are several options available. You can choose to file your taxes on your own or hire a professional.

There are a number of online software programs that allow you to easily and securely input your information and calculate your own tax return. If you don't feel confident in filing yourself, you can always hire a professional to do the paperwork for you – but it's still your responsibility to collect all of your receipts and documents. You should also be aware that you are responsible for any errors – even if you've hired a professional to file for you.

Cautions with filing online:

If you choose to file your taxes online, there are a few things you should do to secure yourself. First, make sure the company you're filing with is reputable. Banks are generally very secure. You can tell if a website is secure by looking in at the "http" in your task bar. If the website shows "https" on any page where you're inputting personal information, it's a sign that the site is secure (that's why they add the "s").
