You've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the perfect home. You've landscaped the yard, painted the garage and installed the perfect deck, to make sure your home looks outstanding from the outside...but what about the inside?

All too often, new homeowners spend so much time making their homes attractive from the outside that they forget to focus on the inside. The fact that your home is beautiful from the outside will mean nothing if it's boring and unattractive once your guests enter. Luckily, we have a number of tips (5 to be exact) to help you improve the interior design of your home without spending a fortune in the process.

1.    Colors. Painting the walls of a new home is the easiest and cheapest way to improve the look of your interior. Not only will updated colors (like neutral beige or chocolate brown) make your home look more modern but a fresh coat of paint will make the walls look cleaner, newer and more polished. Who wouldn't want that?

2.    Furniture. The furniture you choose for the interior of your home will have a huge impact on the overall look and feel of the space. Make sure you choose the right size furniture for each room (pieces that are too big or too small will make the room look disproportionate).

3.    Accessories. Lamps, tables, TVs, plants, pictures, paintings and mirrors are all great accessories that will really improve the look and feel of your home. Adding a few accessories to each room will add character and help individualize your space to reflect your personal tastes. Be careful though, too many accessories in one room can make the space look tacky and overdone – one or two main pieces in each room is ideal.

4.    Feng Shui. You may have heard of the term Feng Shui before but for those of you who haven't, let us explain. Feng Shui is the placement of certain objects in a room that create a mood or environment based on how the objects are setup. If you're familiar with the concept, you can likely implement it yourself. If you're not familiar, there are many Feng Shui experts who are ready and waiting to help you improve the mood of your home.

5.    Design. While the actual design of your home may be relatively impossible to change, sometimes, certain situations allow for it. For example, one way to greatly improve the interior design of your home is by knocking out a wall. Knocking out a wall – or creating a half wall – will open up the space and make your room appear much larger. Check with building inspectors beforehand to make sure the wall isn't necessary in supporting the structure of your home.
